Effective Communications for Systems Builders

The ability to articulate clear messages and create strong, effective communications plans are essential skills for early childhood systems builders.

Early care and education leaders need effective communications to make their case for adequate funding to the policymakers and public.Building an early learning system is complex. It does not always lend itself to simple messages. However, the comprehensive approach of systems building makes it even more important for early childhood leaders to effectively and regularly communicate with various audiences.

Systems builders need to make their case to:

  • Recruit and engage stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the need for adequate funding.
  • Strengthen partnerships with individual and organizational allies.
  • Educate a wide variety of stakeholders about what young children need to thrive.

Communicating Strategically

The BUILD Initiative provides information and resources to help systems building leaders develop effective communications strategies. We bring state leaders together with communications experts, offer peer-to-peer sharing and learning, provide resources and more. We also work closely with colleague organizations to help early childhood leaders create messages that will resonate with policymakers and political leaders, public sector and nonprofit allies, foundation and business leaders, the general public, and, of course, families and community leaders with the most at stake in having a strong early childhood system.

For example, we have compiled resources to help state leaders demonstrate the short and long-term benefits and promise of supporting children and their families in the first years of life. One of our newest publications, A Practical Outreach Guide for a Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS), offers a step-by-step plan and state and local-level examples for developing a comprehensive, multi-pronged communications strategy.

We’ve brought early childhood leaders together with communications expert Rich Neimand of Neimand Collaborative to discuss the ways in which state teams could use strategic positioning, messaging, and marketing to share the value, utility and power of systems building.
