Child Welfare Webinar Series: Building Upstream Support Strategies for PN-3 Child Welfare Prevention
November 20
2:00 PM EST
Thriving Families Safer Children (TFSC) is a national public, private, and philanthropic partnership established to assist jurisdictions in creating a more just and equitable system that benefits all children and families and breaks harmful intergenerational cycles of trauma and poverty by focusing the child welfare system on primary prevention. With funding from the Pritzker Children’s Initiative, PN-3 coalitions in New Jersey, New Mexico, and Nebraska are working with TFSC to bring the PN-3 perspective to state and community child welfare system reform efforts and explore prevention strategies.
Join us for a webinar on November 20 to hear from two of the states participating in this effort, New Mexico and Nebraska, about their work to build a continuum of prevention to strengthen families and reduce the likelihood of child maltreatment while also working on programmatic and policy transformations of their child welfare system that directly affect the PN-3 population. You will also hear from partners at the Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) about their blueprint to develop an upstream support and child welfare prevention plan for young children and their families.
This webinar is the second in BUILD’s six-part series Moving Away from Family Separation: Cross-systems Strategies to Support Young Children and Families at Risk of Child Welfare Involvement. The webinar series continues BUILD’s exploration of how the child welfare and early childhood systems—including all child and family-serving systems—can align and work together to achieve better outcomes for children and families.
Presenters:
- Cynthia L. Tate, Ph.D., BUILD Initiative (Moderator)
- Shadi Houshyar, Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP)
- Jennifer Skala, Nebraska Children and Families Foundation
- Mary E. Coogan, Esq., Advocates for Children of New Jersey

State-level Data for Understanding Child Welfare in the United States
Report December 4, 2024
This comprehensive child welfare resource from Child Trends provides state and national data on child maltreatment, foster care, kinship caregiving, permanency, and older youth in care. The data are essential to help policymakers understand how many children and youth come in contact with the child welfare system, and why. States can use this information to ensure that their child welfare systems support the safety, stability, and well-being of all families in their state.

Since 2020, BUILD Initiative has explored how the child welfare system and other early childhood systems (i.e., health, mental health, housing, early intervention, transportation, economic support, early care and education and all the child-and-family serving systems) can align and work together to achieve better outcomes for children and families. According to Dr. Cynthia Tate, who leads the project, several states are developing promising programs, policies, and strategies that can inspire other states.
