Under the Surface: Confronting Housing Access in Early Childhood

July 16, 2025

Home is often described as a child’s first classroom—a place where routines are built, language is learned, and relationships are nurtured. But what happens when that home is out of reach? When housing is tied to employment, and any disruption—like a child’s illness—can unravel it all? Housing isn’t just shelter. It shapes how a child grows, feels, and thrives. Without it, families are forced into survival mode—where vulnerability becomes dangerous, and asking for help is met with silence or shame. This webinar will pull back the curtain on how safe and stable housing is a cornerstone of early childhood development—and why it’s time to treat it as such.

Building on the June conversation about family homelessness, we will take a deeper look at the role of housing access in supporting early childhood development and family stability. The conversation will explore the intersection of housing and early childhood systems, underscoring the importance of safe, stable housing as an essential element of a child’s healthy start in life. We’ll examine the types of housing assistance that currently exist, and the challenges families face in navigating them, particularly in under-resourced and racially marginalized communities. Additionally, we will provide an overview of policy gaps, systemic barriers, and current budget updates impacting housing programs—and what these mean for families with young children. The session will also lift promising practices from public housing authorities and continuums of care that demonstrate what’s possible when systems align to meet families where they are.
